Tonight we’re heading to the Alps for Christmas. This year I’ll celebrate the birth of Jesus with my in-laws. We’ll spend our trips back and forth on night trains. I actually relish those journeys. There’s something spine-tingling about changing places in the twilight.
You get your fave’ sandwiches, procure the latest good reading and maybe treat your ears to some nice tunes. I try to chose my music according to the jaunt. This time I’ll go for something melodious as well as with quiver.
On those five days in the mountains we plan to go downhill skiing. It’ll be an interesting ride since I can’t even recall the last time I did it. Maybe it was Mount Hood in Oregon. Or Lapland. For sure, I’ll savor the slopes and tranquilly take my time descending. At one point I’ll definitely stop for a glass of mulled wine. Let its spiciness tickle my nose and tongue, and the warmth of the mug dandle my fingers.
I’m looking forward to this little wintry getaway. I’ll have time for myself. And people around. I’ll get in touch with my thoughts and discover more of France. Paris will always be the Place, the only one for me, but it is fun getting acquainted with other regions too. Funnily, when I encounter folks from elsewhere, I feel so Parisian. Urbane pleasures undoubtedly possess my heart – but I gladly lend bits of affection to something different …for a season.
