Yellow Not Mellow

Yellow isn’t really my color of predilection. Having a pale skin, I’ve always strayed away from all forms of this chirpy hue. I’m so used to thinking that it would make me look utterly seasick. With certain apprehension I observe that yellow is popping up like juicy fall mushrooms. Many stars are wearing it in galas, and yellow tops and accessories keep abruptly sprouting. Spring/summer 2009 shows display it with flashing colors – huh huh – too. How will this rather challenging tint suit everyone?

When I drew the above artwork, it got me all nostalgic. As a junior higher, I used to fill up notebooks after another with fashion sketches. Now that the 80s lines are back, the memory is even more vivid. The other day I passed in front of the Paris institution of Beaux-Arts – the very crafty heaven I saw myself in. Now I’m reasoning that I became artistic via other paths.

There are some dozen ideas brewing inside of me. Things that I want to make come reality. Paris keeps inspiring me. I adore her for that. Who wouldn’t, if artfully inclined, be invigorated at the presence of the Seine river’s tranquil drift?

  • I look green in yellow–really not pretty. But, your drawing is very pretty.

  • La Belette Rouge – Thanks! I totally see what you mean;)

  • your drawing is really beautiful. i love the delicate slim lines that accompany the softness of yellow. yellow really is a funny colour. now that you mention it, i unconsciously last year bought a pair of soft yellow trousers and on another occasion a casual yellow wool sweater. it looks like a long sleeve t-shirt. i didn’t even think about the colour, i just like the look of the garments and bought them. funny…

  • Audrey – I’m very touched you like my drawing:) Yellow is actually starting to intrigue me more and more. Usually people who wear it are fascinating. They often have a strive in them to be what they feel like being.

  • Red lipstick and red nail polish might distract the observers from the yellow outfit. :-) That OR deep plunging neckline.

  • Ming the Merciless – Hmm… there might just be a lot of truth in that;)

  • nice job!

I like that the image retains spontaneity. It’s easy to overwork a drawing…within a split second, a drawing can go from being fresh to labored.

I agree, very few people can pull off yellow. I guess it depends on how bright or pastel it is? I’d look horrific.

  • Kitty – Thanks Kitty! I totally agree with you on the fact that a drawing is so fast spoiled… and then there’s basically nothing you can do.
